PrEP works by building up protection in your body. When taken consistently, it prevents HIV from replicating and establishing itself in your body, even if you’ve come into contact with the virus.
PrEP is for anyone who wants to protect themselves from HIV. It’s especially recommended for anyone who fits these circumstances:
• Has partners of unknown HIV status.
• Doesn’t consistently use condoms.
• Has been diagnosed with an STI in the past year.
• Uses injection drugs.
When taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the possibility of acquiring HIV from sexual activity by about 99% and from injection drug use by at least 74%.
Many people on PrEP experience no or only mild side effects.

Daily Oral PrEP: Common side effects like nausea, headache, or stomach pain usually go away in a few weeks.

Injectable PrEP: Side effects may include injection site reactions, nausea, fatigue, or dizziness.

If you have severe or persistent side effects, contact your healthcare provider.

Daily oral PrEP is one option, but there are also long-acting injectable forms of PrEP that require less frequent dosing. A healthcare provider can help you choose the best option for you.
You can get PrEP through a healthcare provider or through our partnership with QCare Plus that makes access convenient and discreet. Click here to learn how to start today.
No! Many programs, including ours in partnership with QCare Plus, provide PrEP at low or no cost to individuals without insurance. Assistance programs are also available to help with costs and/or enrolling in insurance.
PrEP is taken before potential exposure to HIV to prevent it, while PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is taken after a possible exposure and must be started within 72 hours.
PrEP protects against HIV only. It doesn’t prevent other STIs or pregnancy, so consider additional methods like condoms or birth control.
PrEP is safe for most people, but you’ll need to have an HIV test before starting to ensure you’re HIV-negative. A healthcare provider will also check your kidney function and overall health.
If you stop taking PrEP, your protection against HIV will gradually decrease. Talk to a healthcare provider if you plan to stop, and use other prevention methods in the meantime.
The saying goes, “If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.” Taking proactive steps like using PrEP empowers you to protect your sexual health and stay in control.
